ACA trainee accountant

“The social side of PKF Francis Clark is very important to the leadership here. We have regular team socials and two large parties every year that bring everyone together from the local office. Many of us meet up outside of work too and I’m on our five-a-side team.”

“I first got the idea of becoming an accountant whilst at The University Of Exeter. They have a Career Zone there and though that I got myself a part-time job as an Accountants Assistant, and I liked it!

I did a Maths degree and that set me up well for this role. That said I’ve got trainee accountant colleagues who did very different things to me at uni, including English Literature and Graphic Design.

I’m now a Semi-Senior in the Audit and Corporate Services team. This means I work on several different clients across various locations and help to complete their annual audits. The best bit of my job is getting to work on a wide variety of clients who operate across numerous sectors. It has helped me to gain a wider understanding of how all types of businesses operate. The thing I enjoy most of all is walking round a client’s premises to see how their processes work.

I grew up in Cornwall and never wanted to go to a big city to get a job. I love being in amongst the great outdoors in the South West. Exeter is the perfect best of both of for me – it has the city as well as being close to the beach down at Exmouth. PKF Francis Clark was a natural choice for me as it is one of the leading firms in the South West and that’s where I want to live.

The social side of PKF Francis Clark is very important to the leadership here. We have regular team socials and two large parties every year that bring everyone together from the local office. Many of us meet up outside of work too and I’m on our five-a-side team which plays weekly.

Looking to the future there are numerous options for fully qualified accountants, we’re really in demand! Given that PKF Francis Clark has many different departments I’m potentially able to try my hand in any team, for example VAT, Corporate Finance or Business Services. However, my current plan is to work my way up within the Audit team and see where that takes me!
