You’ll work with a diverse client portfolio of commercial businesses with turnovers of up to £300m, from owner-managed businesses to listed entities, charities, educational establishments and professional firms such as lawyers.

Our auditor jobs will require you to:

  • Provide an independent opinion on annual financial statements to business leaders
  • Understand technical and commercial risks and ensure they are appropriately managed
  • Analyse or prepare annual accounts and other financial data to both UK and international standards
  • Use analytics tools and software to understand data, draw conclusions and make recommendations
  • Lead or be part of high performing teams
  • Support complex and often fast-moving projects, which may include business sales and acquisitions
  • Support group restructuring exercises, including client/HMRC liaison, complex accounting and company secretarial work

When you take an audit job with us you’ll work in a sub team on clearly defined projects. You get to work in different teams and for a wide range of clients as part of gaining experience and developing your skills and knowledge. We look for clear communication and strong rapport building skills, as both are crucial for team-working and delivering excellent client service.

Our auditor teams often work together on client sites, as this is usually the most efficient and effective approach, but we have also adopted a hybrid working model where we can work virtually using collaborative online platforms.

A team of internal experts offer a comprehensive, bespoke training programme and provide technical and practical skills, which continues beyond ACA qualification.

What’s it really like when you start an audit job? Audit is more numbers, it’s a great way to learn about managing a business.

Team members come from a variety of backgrounds including engineering, humanities, languages, and sciences as well as maths and business. Successful candidates for our auditing jobs will be strong at critical thinking and have excellent communication skills.

Working in audit and assurance means you get the opportunity to experience working on site at clients’ premises as part of an audit team of typically two to four people for one or two weeks per project. Whilst we can (and in some cases do) audit remotely, being on site for part of a project is useful in understanding the business, beneficial as part of your training and development and important for delivering great client service.

We operate as a firmwide audit and assurance department, broken down into regions within the South West. Our teams work largely within their local region to limit travel time. There are occasional instances where we work outside the region, but these are exceptional cases. In some situations work can be performed remotely but balanced with the need for in-person coaching and mentoring, which is invaluable, particularly during training.

You’ll begin by joining all our new trainees on induction to introduce you to the firm, when you’ll get to meet lots of new colleagues.

Throughout your first few weeks, we’ll give you the building blocks to kick start your career. You’ll start with our one-week induction programme, followed by a one-week accounting programme, then a practical course to introduce you to the key concepts of auditing, progressing to on-the-job training in audit and assurance.

Our auditing jobs are based in multiple locations across the South West. We have regular local and firm-wide team meetings across the audit team to keep everyone in touch with what is happening across the team.

We arrange regular team building activities as a whole team, recent examples include bowling, paintballing, clip and climb, raft-building and laser quest. Team members also join in events at their local office, such as breakfast socials, various sporting events and our prestigious summer and winter socials, which are big nights out at great venues.

As a trainee in your first three years, you’ll be juggling the balance of working and studying. During this time, you’ll also have regular career conversations about where you’re going and how you can get there. After the three-year initial training period, the next 1-2 years are key in consolidating your knowledge and leading more complex projects with the opportunity to move towards management.

Everyone gets annual performance development reviews to agree performance grades so you can understand how you are progressing. As a firm, our size means there are great opportunities for all here. There is the opportunity to further your ambitions in many ways, for example taking further professional qualifications, on-the-job training, soft skills training, mentoring and so on. The possibilities are wide open!

You’ll study towards the Chartered Accountant qualification (ACA), one of the most advanced learning and professional development programmes available. It takes three years to complete and is fully funded by the firm.

During your three years, you’ll attend in-person training with First Intuition, where you’ll study for and undertake 15 exams with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Each exam is directly relevant to the work you will do throughout your training.
