ACA trainee accountant

“After University I went straight into teaching maths. After three years I realised it wasn’t offering me the lifestyle I wanted. I knew accountancy could play to my strengths, I enjoyed solving problems and working logically.”

“I grew up in Leicester and then moved to Cornwall 10 years ago to study at the University of Exeter campus there. I knew almost straight away I wouldn’t be wanting to leave again. It’s very laidback with so many beautiful places to explore and the people are so friendly. There’s nothing I miss about the city life – I’m always pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do here.

After University I went straight into teaching maths. After three years I realised it wasn’t offering me the lifestyle I wanted. I knew accountancy could play to my strengths, I enjoyed solving problems and working logically. My degree is in Zoology and I’d not had any accountancy experience, so I started an evening course studying the level 3 AAT accountancy apprenticeship to get a feel for it.

I really enjoyed the content, so I decided to apply to the graduate scheme at PKF Francis Clark and move onto the level 7 ACA qualification. Getting the chance to study for a qualification like that alongside a full-time role was an invaluable opportunity. I was sold by how welcoming and approachable everyone was throughout the interview process.

I’ve been here over two years now and just have my final exams to go. I’ve been really well supported throughout the process, both through my studies and the day to day work we do. Working a full-time job whilst studying is very different from University but when you’re supported so well, with quality tuition (and the chance to decompress with a trip to the beach every day!) it becomes enjoyable.

The firm places a lot of importance on a great work life balance and has many schemes to promote wellbeing. The Truro office is close knit. I could turn to anyone for support if needed and I’ve felt like a valued member of the team from the get go. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the future holds here.”
