Do’s and don’ts when using AI for job applications

Using AI for job applications, or not, is totally up to you.

We don’t mind whether you use AI or not when applying to us. If you do use AI tools, we encourage you to use them wisely. This guide to best practice when using AI for job applications covers every stage of the application process.

Stage 1: online application

  • Use AI tools like Grammarly or ChatGPT to proofread your job application, correct grammar and tone, and ensure it’s clear and error-free.
  • Do not copy AI-generated answers word for word or exaggerate your experience – always personalise your responses to reflect your genuine skills and story.

Stage 2: online verbal and numerical reasoning tests

  • Use AI to practice questions: Ask AI to generate practice verbal or numerical reasoning questions similar to those used in psychometric testing.
  • Use AI to help with step-by-step explanation of how to solve example questions you’ve found online or in practice books.
  • Do not use AI tools during the real test as we are trying to assess your ability to succeed in the role.

Stage 3: pre-recorded video interview

  • Use AI for preparation such as company research to find out about our services, culture, values, and recent news.
  • Use AI for interview practice by asking it to generate typical competency-based interview questions.
  • Use AI to support your real-life examples. For example, tell me about a time you’ve overcome a challenging situation? Start by writing down what you’d normally say. Ask AI to review and rephrase or suggest improvements to your answer and then edit with your own personal touch.
  • Use AI to list relevant skills associated with the job and then think and apply how you’ve demonstrated these skills through your own past experiences.
  • Do not use AI tools during the live video interview to answer the questions; remember we are trying to get to know you.

Stage 4: assessment centre

  • Use AI for preparation – such as practice interview questions and to find out about the firm and role.
  • Use AI to find out about how to perform in a group exercise.
  • Do not use AI tools during the assessment centre as this is not your own work, and we are trying to assess you.

Top tips when using AI for job applications

To succeed with integrity…

  • Let AI support, not replace – use AI to help with learning and preparation, but don’t let it do everything for you.

  • Practice independently – after using AI, practice speaking and writing on your own.

  • Reflect on your motivations – think about why you want to be an accountant and why you want to join PKF Francis Clark. Authenticity matters.

Pitfalls to avoid when using AI for job applications

And finally some things to avoid when using AI for job applications.

Make it your own. Don’t accept AI content without understanding it. Always question, research, and make sure your application reflects your own abilities and views.

Be honest about AI use. You might be asked how you’ve used AI during the application process. Passing off AI work as your own hurts your credibility.

Don’t sacrifice authenticity. Your application should show who you are and why you’re a good fit for PKF Francis Clark. AI can help, but it can’t replace your personal story.

While using AI for job applications can streamline the work and help you stand out, it’s important that the authentic you still shines though. Thoughtful and well-informed answers will always get you noticed
